A kerb is the edge of a pavement or raised path. Kerbs usually border areas that vehicles frequently use, like roads or car parks. They tend to be raised to act as a barrier to vehicles, to prevent them from mounting a pavement or pedestrianised area. Kerbs are also used to provide structural support to paths and pavements and, in some cases, to aid drainage.

Kerbs can be made using a range of materials. They’re most commonly constructed from concrete. However, they can also be made from natural stone and asphalt. Natural stone tends to create a more decorative kerb, whilst concrete is usually used for more functional purposes.

Kerbs are usually raised about 10-20cm from the road surface. However, in certain places, a kerb is at or close to road level to allow vehicles to drive over it. This is called a dropped kerb. Dropped kerbs are often found at the ends of driveways, to allow easy access to and from the road. If you’re constructing a new driveway and need to drop a kerb, you have to apply for permission from your local council.
